Dating as a Millennial: The Ultimate Guide to Dating Apps, First Dates & Finding Love
Dating as a millennial can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re surrounded by engagements, weddings, and seemingly perfect relationships on social media. From navigating dating apps to spotting red flags and building meaningful connections, here’s my guide to finding love without losing yourself along the way.

Let me start off by saying this post is a LONG time coming. There have been so many occasions when I’ve wanted to sit down and share my raw, unfiltered feelings about dating as a woman in her late twenties. Don’t worry, this isn’t a pity party or my opportunity to bash men. Quite the opposite! This post is for the single girl who’s completely fed up with dating but still believes her person is out there. It’s for the girl who feels like she’s the only single woman in a room full of couples. Most importantly, it’s a reminder that you are not alone. There are SO many incredible single women and men navigating the same dating struggles, wondering when they’ll finally meet someone who feels right. Whether you’re new to dating apps, getting back into dating after a long relationship, or simply tired of disappointing first dates, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned about dating as a millennial, knowing your worth, and finding a genuine connection.
Dating as a Millennial Isn’t Easy
Let’s talk about what dating looked like when I originally wrote this post in 2018. After spending six years in relationships, entering the dating world again was a complete shock to my system. Seriously, when did everything change?! Dating had become faster, more digital, and increasingly focused on instant gratification. We were officially the swipe-right generation, where first impressions were made through photos, conversations happened over text, and dinner dates were often replaced with casual drinks or hookups. For someone looking for a serious relationship, it could feel incredibly defeating. Was anyone actually interested in building a real connection anymore? Thankfully, the answer was YES, but finding that connection sometimes required a little extra patience. And let’s not forget social media! Between engagement announcements, wedding photos, pregnancy announcements, and couples buying their dream homes, it was easy to feel like everyone else was moving forward while you were standing still. But here’s something I wish more single women remembered: social media is a highlight reel, not the full story. Every relationship has its own challenges, and you never know what someone experienced before finding their partner. Your relationship status doesn’t determine your happiness, success, or worth.
Why More Millennial Women Are Waiting to Get Married
One thing I absolutely LOVE about our generation is how many women are prioritizing their education, careers, businesses, friendships, and personal goals. We’re building lives we’re proud of, and marriage doesn’t have to happen on someone else’s timeline. Let’s give a round of applause for that! When I originally wrote this article, I was balancing work, friendships, family commitments, church, and everything else life threw my way. Finding time to date felt like adding another full-time job to my schedule. That’s one reason online dating appealed to me. Would I rather spend every evening attending social events hoping to meet someone, or put on a face mask, make some tea, turn on Netflix, and browse dating profiles from my couch? My inner introvert was definitely choosing option two! Dating apps can make meeting new people more convenient, especially when your schedule is already packed. But whether you’re dating at 25, 30, 35, or beyond, remember that there’s no universal deadline for finding love. You can want marriage and still enjoy the life you’re creating right now.
Know Your Worth (And Add Tax!)
So, you’re ready to put yourself out there and start dating. Good for you, girl! But before you jump into the dating world, I want you to remember one very important thing: know your worth, and then add tax! It’s easy to get caught up in wanting someone to choose you, especially when you’ve been single for a while. But dating isn’t just about being chosen. It’s about deciding whether someone is actually a good match for YOU. If you’re struggling with self-esteem, take time to nurture your confidence and reconnect with the things that make you happy. Spend time with your girlfriends, talk to a therapist, read personal development books, focus on your hobbies, or ask someone you trust for advice. You don’t need to have perfect confidence or be completely healed from every past experience before dating. We all have insecurities! What matters is recognizing that you deserve kindness, honesty, consistency, and respect. The right relationship should add something positive to your life, not leave you constantly questioning your value. And please, whatever you do, don’t lower your standards simply because you’re tired of being single.
Get to Know Yourself Before Finding a Partner
Before you start searching for your perfect match, spend some time getting to know yourself. Sure, you know your favourite ice cream flavour is vanilla, Solitaire is your favourite game to unwind, and The Office is your comfort show. But do you know how you prefer to receive affection? How do you handle disagreements? What makes you feel secure in a relationship? And what are your absolute dealbreakers? Dating can teach you SO much about yourself, but a little self-reflection beforehand can make the experience easier. If you know me personally, you’ll know I’m a personality test junkie. I originally identified as an INFP through Myers-Briggs and a Type 2w3 through the Enneagram, and I loved learning more about my personality. When I first wrote this guide, Plenty of Fish offered relationship-focused assessments exploring areas such as communication, intimacy, self-confidence, conflict resolution, and relationship needs. While app features can change, the idea behind these exercises is still useful. Personality quizzes can be fun conversation starters and tools for reflection, although they aren’t definitive scientific measures of compatibility. The important thing is understanding what you need to feel happy and supported in a relationship, rather than trying to become whoever you think someone else wants you to be.
I’m Ready to Date. What Now?
Okay, girlfriend, you’re ready to enter the dating game. Now where the heck do you start?! If you’re an introvert or have a busy schedule, online dating can be a convenient way to meet people outside your usual social circle. Dating apps have made it possible to connect with other singles without spending every weekend hoping to bump into someone at a coffee shop. When I originally wrote this article, I liked that Plenty of Fish offered filters beyond basic age and distance preferences. Depending on the app and its current features, you may be able to narrow down potential matches based on relationship goals, lifestyle habits, religious beliefs, or whether someone wants children. As a 5’10” girl, I also appreciated having the option to consider height preferences! Once you match with someone, take time to have a few conversations before meeting in person. Ask questions, look for genuine interest, and pay attention to whether the conversation feels natural. I also appreciate someone who can communicate clearly. Good grammar isn’t everything, but thoughtful messages and genuine effort definitely catch my attention! When you’re ready to meet, keep the first date simple. Coffee, dinner, or a casual walk in a public place can give you an opportunity to talk without too much pressure. And if you’re nervous, remember what my brother once told me: chances are, your date is nervous too! For more dating inspiration, you can also explore the Plenty of Fish blog. Above all, have fun, trust your instincts, and don’t feel pressured to rush into anything.
How to Use Dating Apps Without Getting Overwhelmed
Dating apps can be a great way to meet people, but they can also become exhausting FAST. Between endless swiping, conversations that go nowhere, and matches who suddenly disappear, it’s easy to experience dating burnout. My advice? Treat dating apps as one way to meet people, not your entire dating strategy. You don’t need to spend hours swiping every night or respond to every message immediately. Set aside a little time when you’re actually in the mood to connect, focus on conversations that feel promising, and give yourself permission to take breaks. It’s also helpful to be clear about what you’re looking for. If you want a serious relationship, there’s nothing wrong with saying so! You don’t need to pretend you’re interested in something casual just because you’re worried about scaring someone away. The goal isn’t to attract as many matches as possible. It’s to meet someone whose intentions and values align with yours.
What to Write in Your Dating App Bio
Your dating profile is your opportunity to show potential matches a little bit of your personality before you’ve even said hello. And girlfriend, please don’t feel like you need to create the world’s most impressive biography! The best dating app bios are usually authentic, specific, and easy to start a conversation about. Instead of simply writing that you love travelling, mention your favourite destination or the trip you’re dreaming about next. If you’re obsessed with iced coffee, reality TV, or spending Sundays reading, include it! Those little details give someone an easy opening message and help attract people with similar interests. I also recommend choosing recent photos that show your face clearly, along with a few pictures that reflect your hobbies and everyday life. You don’t need heavily edited photos or a perfectly curated Instagram aesthetic. You want someone to be excited about meeting the real you! Red Flags to Watch for When Dating Someone New
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about dating is that chemistry and compatibility are NOT the same thing. You can have an incredible first date with someone and still discover that they’re not the right person for you. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to how someone treats you, rather than focusing only on butterflies and attraction. Some dating red flags include inconsistent communication, disrespecting your boundaries, pressuring you to move faster than you’re comfortable with, and making promises they never follow through on. I also pay attention to how someone speaks about former partners and treats people around them. Everyone has bad days, and one awkward interaction doesn’t automatically mean someone is a terrible match. What matters is whether concerning behaviour becomes a pattern. If someone repeatedly leaves you feeling confused, anxious, or disrespected, it’s worth asking yourself whether that relationship is actually meeting your needs. And if you’re wondering whether someone is genuinely interested or simply playing games, my post on 10 Ways to Spot a Player on Dating Apps might help.
What to Wear on a First Date
Can we talk about the first-date outfit dilemma?! You’ve finally made plans with someone you’re excited about, and suddenly your entire closet looks like a disaster. Sound familiar? Whether you’re meeting someone from Bumble, Plenty of Fish, or through mutual friends, my biggest first-date fashion tip is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. You don’t need to buy a brand-new outfit or dress completely differently from your usual style. For a casual coffee date, I love the idea of flattering jeans, a cute blouse, and comfortable shoes. If you’re going out for dinner, a pretty dress or tailored pants with a feminine top can feel a little more elevated. Most importantly, dress for the venue and weather so you’re not spending the entire date adjusting your outfit or worrying about uncomfortable shoes. The goal is to feel like the best version of yourself, not someone you’re pretending to be. And remember, the right person is going to be much more interested in getting to know you than whether you’re wearing the latest fashion trend.
How to Tell if Someone Actually Likes You
We’ve all been there. You have a great date, the conversation flows, and suddenly you’re analyzing every text message with your girlfriends. Does he like me? Is he playing hard to get? Why hasn’t he texted back?! While there’s no magical formula for figuring out someone’s feelings, I think consistent effort is one of the best indicators of genuine interest. Someone who likes you will generally make an effort to communicate, follow through on plans, ask questions about your life, and respect your boundaries. That doesn’t mean they need to text you every five minutes or be available 24/7. We all have busy schedules! What matters is whether their words and actions line up over time. If you’re constantly guessing where you stand, it’s okay to have an honest conversation about what you’re both looking for. Dating shouldn’t require becoming a detective just to figure out whether someone wants to see you again.
First-Date Safety Tips Every Woman Should Know
As exciting as meeting someone new can be, your safety should always come first. If you’re meeting someone from a dating app for the first time, choose a public location and let a trusted friend or family member know where you’re going. I also recommend arranging your own transportation so you can leave whenever you want. Take your time getting to know someone before sharing personal information, including your home address or workplace details. If something feels uncomfortable, you’re allowed to end the date early. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for prioritizing your safety. And please remember that being polite is never more important than protecting your boundaries. The right person will respect your decisions and want you to feel comfortable.
How to Stay Positive When You’re Tired of Dating
Dating fatigue is REAL, especially when you’ve been putting yourself out there for months or even years without finding the connection you’re looking for. It’s completely normal to feel discouraged after disappointing dates, confusing conversations, or another relationship that didn’t work out. But I want to remind you of something: being single isn’t a personal failure. It doesn’t mean you’re behind, too picky, or somehow less worthy of love. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is take a break from dating and focus on the parts of your life that make you happy. Spend time with friends, pursue your goals, plan a trip, start a new hobby, or enjoy a quiet night at home without feeling guilty. Your life doesn’t need to be on hold while you’re waiting to meet someone. If you’re struggling with this season of life, I’ve also shared my thoughts on How to Be Happy When You’re Single.
