Everything You Need to Know About Coachella: The Ultimate Festival Guide
If attending Coachella is on your bucket list, girlfriend, I totally get it! Between the incredible live music, boho festival fashion, celebrity sightings and gorgeous California desert scenery, it’s one of those experiences that feels like a dream come true. But before you start planning your outfits and packing your suitcase, there are a few things you should know about attending Coachella. From festival tickets and accommodations to transportation, packing essentials and surviving the desert heat, a little planning can make a HUGE difference!
I was lucky enough to attend Coachella with my bestie Meghan and we had the absolute best time exploring Palm Springs, dancing to our favourite artists and documenting our California adventures. Along the way, I learned plenty of lessons about what to wear, what to bring and what I wish I’d known before going. I’ve shared some of those lessons in my 15 things to know before attending Coachella guide, but today we’re covering everything from start to finish. Whether you’re planning your first Coachella adventure or returning for another unforgettable weekend, here’s your ultimate guide to Coachella, including festival tickets, accommodations, outfit ideas, beauty tips and everything you need to know before you go!
What Is Coachella and Where Is It Held?
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, better known as Coachella, is one of the most famous music festivals in the world. Held annually at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, the festival brings together an incredible mix of musical performances, large-scale art installations, food vendors and fashion inspiration. Located in Southern California’s beautiful Coachella Valley, the festival is surrounded by palm trees, mountain views and breathtaking desert scenery. One of the things that makes Coachella so special is that it’s much more than a concert. It’s an entire experience! Between exploring the festival grounds, discovering new artists, taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere, there’s always something happening. During my own visit, I remember being completely blown away by the energy of the crowds, the beautiful setting and the excitement of seeing some of my favourite performers live. It’s definitely a destination worth considering if you love music, travel and a little adventure.
When Does Coachella Take Place?
Coachella traditionally takes place over two weekends in April, with each weekend featuring a similar main music lineup. The exact dates change each year, so I recommend checking the official Coachella website before making travel arrangements. The festival typically runs for three days per weekend, giving attendees plenty of opportunities to see their favourite artists and explore the grounds. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to attend the first or second weekend, how much time you’ll need for travel and whether you’d like to spend a few extra days exploring Palm Springs or nearby destinations. Personally, I love the idea of turning Coachella into a longer California getaway rather than flying in and out just for the festival. There’s so much to see and do in the surrounding area!
How to Get Coachella Tickets
If Coachella is on your bucket list, purchasing tickets is one of the first things you’ll need to organize. The festival generally offers several pass options, including General Admission and VIP experiences, although specific packages and benefits can change from year to year. Standard festival passes typically cover one full weekend rather than individual days. Ticket prices vary depending on the year, weekend, pass type and purchase tier, so it’s important to check official pricing rather than relying on older articles or social media posts. I recommend signing up for official festival announcements and familiarizing yourself with the ticket sale process before passes become available. If you’re purchasing tickets through a resale platform, be especially careful about scams and verify the seller and transfer requirements. Once you’ve secured your passes, the real fun begins: planning your outfits, booking accommodations and creating your festival itinerary! For a more detailed planning timeline, check out my how to plan for Coachella guide. It covers the preparation process and offers helpful reminders for organizing your trip.
How Much Does It Cost to Attend Coachella?
Let’s be real: Coachella isn’t exactly the cheapest weekend getaway. Between festival passes, flights, accommodations, transportation, food and all those adorable festival outfits, expenses can add up quickly. During my own trip, I definitely learned the importance of setting a budget before heading to California! While ticket prices and travel costs change each year, it’s helpful to create a realistic budget that includes more than just admission. Think about airfare or driving expenses, hotel or camping costs, airport transfers, shuttle passes, meals, drinks, merchandise and any extra activities you want to enjoy. If you’re traveling with friends, sharing accommodations and transportation expenses may help keep costs manageable. I also recommend setting aside a little extra money for unexpected expenses. Nobody wants to spend their dream festival weekend stressing about their bank account! The goal is to enjoy the experience while making choices that work for your budget.
Where to Stay for Coachella: Palm Springs, Hotels or Camping?
One of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your Coachella trip is choosing where to stay. Some festivalgoers love the convenience and social atmosphere of camping on the festival grounds, while others prefer the comfort of a hotel or vacation rental. Personally, I loved making Coachella part of a bigger Palm Springs getaway! Palm Springs is filled with beautiful mid-century modern architecture, boutique hotels, adorable cafés and some of the most gorgeous desert scenery I’ve ever seen. It’s the perfect place to relax, explore and take photos between festival activities. Other areas to consider include Indio, La Quinta, Indian Wells and surrounding Coachella Valley communities. Each location offers different advantages depending on your budget and transportation preferences. If you plan to stay off-site, make sure to research how you’ll get to and from the festival before booking. A cheaper hotel isn’t necessarily a better deal if transportation becomes expensive or inconvenient. And my biggest tip? Book early! Accommodations can fill up quickly during festival weekends.
How to Get to Coachella: Flights, Shuttles and Transportation
Getting to Coachella requires a little planning, especially if you’re traveling from another state or country. The festival takes place in Indio, California, and many visitors fly into Southern California before arranging transportation to the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs International Airport is one option for reaching the area, while other Southern California airports may offer additional flight choices. Depending on where you’re traveling from, renting a car or arranging shuttle transportation might make sense. Official festival shuttles can be a convenient option for visitors staying in participating areas, but routes, pickup locations and availability may change each year. One thing I definitely recommend is allowing extra travel time. Festival traffic can be busy, and getting from your accommodations to the entrance may take longer than expected. If you’re traveling with friends, make sure everyone understands the transportation plan before leaving your hotel. Trust me, coordinating your ride home is much easier before you’re exhausted from a full day of dancing!

What to Wear to Coachella: Cute Festival Outfit Ideas
Okay, let’s talk about one of my absolute favourite parts of Coachella: the fashion! Coachella has become famous for its festival outfits, and it’s the perfect opportunity to have a little fun with your personal style. From flowy dresses and crochet tops to denim shorts, rompers and Western-inspired accessories, there are so many ways to create a cute festival look. When I attended, I fully embraced the boho-chic aesthetic with desert-inspired outfits that were perfect for exploring Palm Springs and taking photos. But here’s something I learned pretty quickly: comfort is everything! You’ll spend hours walking, standing and dancing, so choose clothing that makes you feel confident without sacrificing practicality. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are especially helpful in warm desert weather, and comfortable shoes are an absolute must. I also recommend bringing a lightweight layer for the evening because desert temperatures can drop after sunset.

Affordable Coachella Outfit Ideas for Women
You definitely don’t need to spend a fortune on a brand-new wardrobe to look cute at Coachella! Personally, I love mixing affordable fashion finds with a few statement accessories to create outfits that feel stylish without being overcomplicated. A floral romper with comfortable boots is a classic festival look, while denim shorts and a lightweight top are perfect for a more casual style. You could also try a breezy matching set, a simple sundress or a one-piece swimsuit styled as a bodysuit with shorts. The trick is choosing versatile pieces that you can mix and match throughout your trip. I also love shopping my own closet before buying anything new. Sometimes all you need is a cute belt, statement sunglasses or a fun hair accessory to completely transform an outfit.

What Shoes Should You Wear to Coachella?
If there’s one piece of fashion advice I wish everyone would take seriously, it’s this: wear comfortable shoes! Coachella involves a LOT of walking, and the last thing you want is to spend your entire weekend dealing with painful blisters. I recommend supportive sneakers, comfortable ankle boots or secure flat shoes that you’ve already worn enough to know they won’t hurt your feet. Avoid wearing brand-new shoes for the first time at the festival, no matter how adorable they look with your outfit. Trust me, sore feet can put a serious damper on your day! If you’re planning multiple festival outfits, try choosing shoes that work with more than one look. That way, you won’t need to pack an entire suitcase dedicated to footwear. And remember, practical doesn’t have to mean boring. Cute sneakers and comfortable boots can look fabulous with dresses, rompers and denim shorts.
What to Pack for Coachella: The Ultimate Festival Packing List
Packing for Coachella is all about being prepared without carrying around a million things you don’t actually need. Between the desert heat, long days outdoors and all the walking, having a few essentials on hand can make your experience SO much more comfortable. I highly recommend checking the festival’s current rules before packing because permitted items, bag sizes and entry requirements can change from year to year. You’ll also want to consider the weather forecast and your personal needs. During my own experience, I learned that having a portable phone charger, comfortable shoes and a plan for staying hydrated can make a huge difference. And don’t forget that evenings can feel much cooler than afternoons, so a lightweight sweater or jacket is always worth considering.
Coachella Packing Checklist
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sunglasses and a hat
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen and SPF lip balm
- Portable phone charger

Coachella Hair and Makeup Ideas
If there’s ever a time to have a little fun with your beauty routine, it’s Coachella! Think glowing skin, beachy waves, braids, colourful eyeshadow, temporary tattoos and playful accessories. Personally, I love a boho-inspired makeup look that’s fun and feminine without feeling too heavy. Since you’ll likely be spending hours outside in the heat, I recommend keeping your makeup relatively lightweight and choosing products that feel comfortable throughout the day. Sunscreen is an absolute must, and a long-wearing lip product, water-resistant mascara and setting spray can be helpful depending on your preferences. For hairstyles, I love messy braids, low ponytails and easy updos that help keep your hair away from your face while you’re dancing. And if you really want to embrace the bohemian aesthetic, a cute flower crown or decorative hair accessory can be such a fun finishing touch.

How to Survive the Coachella Desert Heat
One thing you absolutely need to prepare for is the desert weather. Coachella takes place in Southern California, where spring afternoons can be very warm or hot, especially when you’re spending hours outdoors. During my own trip, I learned pretty quickly that sunshine, walking and dancing can leave you feeling exhausted if you’re not taking care of yourself. Make hydration a priority throughout the day, take breaks when needed and seek out shaded areas when possible. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and breathable clothing, and remember to reapply sun protection according to the product instructions. It’s also important to recognize signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea and unusual weakness. If you’re feeling unwell, stop what you’re doing, move somewhere cooler and seek medical assistance when appropriate. And don’t forget about the evenings! Desert temperatures can change significantly after sunset, so having a lightweight layer can make your journey home much more comfortable.
Things to Do in Palm Springs During Coachella
If you’re traveling to California for Coachella, I highly recommend making time to explore Palm Springs and the surrounding desert. Some of my favourite memories from our trip happened outside the festival grounds! We spent time exploring the area, taking photos and enjoying the beautiful desert atmosphere. There’s something so charming about the combination of palm trees, mountain views and mid-century architecture. If you have an extra day or two, consider visiting local cafés, exploring downtown Palm Springs or enjoying some relaxation by the pool. I also love the idea of scheduling a little downtime before or after the festival so your entire vacation doesn’t feel rushed. After all, if you’re traveling all the way to California, why not make the most of it?
Take a Day Trip to Joshua Tree National Park
If you love nature, photography or beautiful scenery, Joshua Tree National Park is another destination worth considering during a Southern California getaway. My bestie Meghan and I explored Joshua Tree during one of our California adventures, and the landscape was absolutely breathtaking. Between the dramatic rock formations, unique Joshua trees and gorgeous desert views, it’s the kind of place that feels almost otherworldly. I especially love how the scenery makes such a beautiful backdrop for desert-inspired fashion photos. If you’re planning to visit, check current park conditions, entrance requirements and weather forecasts before heading out. Bring plenty of water, wear appropriate footwear and allow enough time to explore safely. Desert conditions can be intense, so it’s important to prepare rather than treating it like a quick photo stop.

10 Coachella Tips for First-Time Festivalgoers
Attending Coachella for the first time can feel a little overwhelming, especially when you’re coordinating transportation, outfits, accommodations and a packed music schedule. But with a little planning, you can focus less on logistics and more on enjoying the experience. Here are ten of my favourite tips for making your festival weekend as fun and stress-free as possible.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking and standing for hours, so choose footwear you already know is comfortable.
- Stay hydrated. Desert weather can be hot and dry, so drink water regularly and take breaks when needed.
- Bring layers. A lightweight jacket or sweater can come in handy when temperatures drop after sunset.
- Plan your must-see performances. Check the official schedule and prioritize your favourite artists.
- Charge your phone. Bring a portable charger so you can take photos and stay connected with your friends.
- Choose a meeting spot. Cell service can be unreliable in large crowds, so create a backup plan if you get separated.
- Set a realistic budget. Food, transportation, merchandise and other expenses can add up quickly.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses and take breaks in shaded areas.
- Review festival policies. Check current rules for bags, wristbands, parking and permitted items before arriving.
- Enjoy the moment. Take plenty of photos, but don’t forget to put your phone down and soak it all in!

My First Coachella Experience: The Trip That Started With a Tweet
Flashback to 2014. It all started over Twitter! The Coachella lineup was announced, and I immediately tweeted it to Meghan, aka Boho Nouveau, fangirling over how amazing it would be to attend. A few minutes later, I received a reply saying, “I’m down.” Then came a text: “No really, I’m down.” And just like that, our Coachella adventure was officially happening! Looking back, I’m SO glad we decided to go. From the journey to Coachella Valley and the iconic Ferris wheel to the performers, nightlife, people and incredible energy, it was hands down one of the best music festivals I’ve ever attended. Some of my favourite performers included Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Pharrell Williams and Girl Talk. Pharrell’s performance even featured appearances from Jay-Z and Usher, which was such an unforgettable surprise! Beyond the music, I loved spending time with my best friend, exploring California and experiencing the atmosphere of such an iconic festival. Those are the kinds of memories that stay with you forever.

Is Coachella Worth It?
If you love live music, traveling with friends and experiencing something a little different, I absolutely think Coachella can be worth it! Of course, it’s not the cheapest vacation once you factor in tickets, flights, accommodations and everything else. But for me, the memories made it special. Beyond seeing incredible performers, I loved exploring Palm Springs, experimenting with festival fashion and spending time with my best friend. It’s the kind of trip that gives you stories to tell for years afterward! That said, everyone’s travel budget and priorities are different. If attending Coachella is a major goal, I recommend planning ahead, setting a realistic budget and deciding which experiences matter most to you. You don’t need to purchase every VIP upgrade or brand-new outfit to have an incredible time. Sometimes the best moments are the unexpected ones, like discovering a new artist or dancing with your girlfriends as the sun goes down.
