I’ve tested SO many baby products, and today I’m sharing my favorite newborn baby essentials that have made life a little easier. If you’re planning to breastfeed or pump, finding a comfortable and efficient breast pump can make a HUGE difference in your daily routine. The BabyBuddha 2.0 quickly became one of my favorite breastfeeding essentials for new moms! I still can’t get over how tiny the motor is compared with the amount of suction it delivers. It’s compact, lightweight, and easy to bring along when I’m on the go. I’m also in LOVE with the flange cushions, which feel so much more comfortable on sensitive postpartum breasts. The pump offers 21 comfort settings, allowing you to adjust the rhythm and suction to find what works best for you. Just remember that stronger suction isn’t necessarily better, and properly fitted flanges are important for comfortable pumping. 2. Peg Perego YPSI Stroller, $699.99
I have officially found one of the most gorgeous baby strollers I’ve ever seen! When I first laid eyes on the Peg Perego YPSI stroller, I was completely obsessed with its beautiful rose-gold details and sophisticated design. But this luxury convertible stroller is so much more than just a pretty piece of baby gear. It’s easy to maneuver, has a smooth ride thanks to its suspension system, and features a reversible stroller seat with three adjustable recline positions for sitting, relaxing, and resting. Another huge selling point for me was its ability to convert from a single stroller into a double with compatible accessories. We chose the beautiful Mon Amour finish, although the stroller comes in other color combinations depending on availability. 3. Peg Perego YPSI Bassinet, $349.99
The Peg Perego YPSI bassinet is just as gorgeous as the YPSI stroller! We’ve primarily been using the bassinet attachment during our daily walks, and Maverick seems so comfortable in it. I love having a flat newborn bassinet option rather than relying on the regular stroller seat before he’s developmentally ready for it. The bassinet features ventilation, a removable mattress for easier cleaning, and compatibility with an appropriate stand, depending on the model. We also loved the convenience of being able to bring the bassinet indoors. One important note for Canadian parents: a stroller bassinet isn’t automatically approved for overnight or unattended sleep, even if it’s marketed that way elsewhere. Always verify that your exact model meets the sleep safety requirements in your country before using it as a regular sleep space. This might seem like a small purchase, but our VAVA baby night light has become one of our most-used newborn nursery essentials! We use it every single day, especially during nighttime feedings and diaper changes. The dimmable touch controls make it super easy to use when you’re half asleep. Simply tap twice to turn it on, then touch and hold to adjust the brightness. I also love that it’s portable, so we can move it between rooms without needing to keep it plugged in. The soft lighting is perfect for those late-night moments when you don’t want to turn on the bright overhead lights. This would make such a practical baby shower gift!
9. VAVA Baby Monitor With Split Screen, $279.99
A reliable baby monitor was high on our newborn baby registry checklist, and we’ve been loving our VAVA split-screen monitor! It’s easy to set up and use, which is exactly what I wanted as a sleep-deprived new mom. One of my favorite features is that it includes two cameras, allowing us to monitor different rooms or viewing angles. This has been especially convenient when moving Maverick’s SNOO between rooms, and I can see how useful the split-screen feature could be for families with more than one child. It’s a great option for parents who want a straightforward video monitor with multiple camera views. Just remember that baby monitors are an additional convenience and don’t replace safe sleep practices or adult supervision.
10. Peek-a-Boo Flappy the Elephant, $31.16
Okay, this might be one of the CUTEST baby toys ever! At seven weeks old, Maverick wasn’t exactly interested in toys yet. In fact, aside from a few black-and-white books, his biggest obsession was our ceiling fans. Anyone else’s newborn completely fascinated by ceiling fans?! But the first time I introduced him to Flappy the Elephant, he was absolutely mesmerized! This adorable interactive toy plays peek-a-boo by covering its face with its oversized ears, and it also plays music while its ears move along to the melody. You press one foot for peek-a-boo and the other for music. Zach and I have even caught ourselves humming the tune around the house. LOL! It’s such a sweet gift idea for a baby, especially for supervised playtime as they grow. Keep plush toys out of your newborn’s crib or bassinet during sleep.
11. Baby Brezza Bottle Washer + Sterilizer, $299
If you’re bottle-feeding, pumping, or combination feeding, you already know how quickly dirty bottles and pump parts pile up. Seriously, the washing NEVER ends! That’s why our Baby Brezza Bottle Washer + Sterilizer has been one of our favorite time-saving newborn feeding essentials. This machine washes, sterilizes, and dries compatible baby bottles and pump parts, which means less time standing over the kitchen sink. It features 20 high-pressure spray jets and six cleaning modes, including wash, sterilize and dry; wash and dry; wash only; sterilize and dry; sterilize only; and dry only. I especially love being able to load the machine and let it handle much of the cleaning process while I focus on other things. We’ve tried quite a few swaddles, and these KeaBabies Velcro Swaddles are hands down some of my favorites! What I love most is the easy Velcro closure. As a new mom, anything that makes bedtime a little less complicated is a win in my books. These swaddles are much easier for me to secure than traditional blankets, especially during those middle-of-the-night changes when I’m running on very little sleep. They come in a pack of three with lots of adorable colors and patterns to choose from, making them a cute addition to a baby registry. For safe sleep, always place a swaddled baby on their back, avoid overheating, and stop swaddling as soon as they show signs of attempting to roll. Make sure the swaddle allows comfortable movement around the hips and isn’t too tight.
13. Kyte Baby Zippered Footie, $37.99
If there’s one thing your newborn will wear on repeat, it’s sleepers! During those first few weeks, comfort and convenience are EVERYTHING, and I quickly became obsessed with Kyte Baby zippered footies. First of all, the fabric is incredibly soft. The bamboo-derived rayon has a smooth, cozy feel that I absolutely love for Maverick. But my favorite feature? The dual zippers! They allow you to unzip just the bottom portion for diaper changes without completely undressing your baby. Trust me, when you’re changing diapers around the clock, this makes life SO much easier. I also appreciate how well these sleepers have held up through frequent washing compared with some of the other brands we’ve tried. If you’re building your newborn clothing essentials checklist, definitely add a few comfortable zippered sleepers.
14. Mommy’s Bliss Gas Relief Drops, $8.99
My little guy experienced quite a bit of gas discomfort during his newborn stage, so we were happy to find something that seemed to help. These Mommy’s Bliss gas relief drops contain simethicone, an ingredient used to help gas bubbles combine so they may be easier to pass. We’ve used them as part of Maverick’s feeding routine, and I personally felt they were helpful for him. They can be administered according to the product instructions, but always check the recommended age, dose, and administration method with your baby’s healthcare provider. Research on simethicone for infant colic is mixed, so results may vary. If your newborn is experiencing persistent crying, vomiting, feeding difficulties, or significant abdominal discomfort, it’s important to speak with your pediatrician rather than assuming gas is the cause.
15. NUK Orthodontic Pacifiers, $12.99
Finding a pacifier your baby actually likes can be a whole adventure! Thankfully, we’ve had great luck with NUK for Nature Orthodontic Pacifiers. These have become our go-to pacifiers for Maverick. They’re designed with an orthodontic-shaped nipple intended to fit comfortably in a baby’s mouth and support a natural sucking motion. The brand offers different sizes, including 0–2 months, 0–6 months, and 6–18 months, depending on the product. As with any pacifier, choose the correct age range, inspect it regularly for wear, and replace it when needed. Orthodontic designs don’t guarantee prevention of future dental issues, but we’ve personally loved these for everyday soothing.
16. Star Pacifier Holder Case, $7.99
Can we talk about how adorable these little star-shaped pacifier cases are?! I love a baby product that’s both cute AND practical, and these definitely fit the bill. Keeping spare pacifiers organized is a must when you’re constantly leaving the house with a newborn. I keep one of these cases in our diaper bag and another in the car so I always have a clean pacifier within reach. They’re compact, easy to carry, and make finding pacifiers so much easier when you’re juggling a baby and approximately a thousand other things. Such a cute little addition to a baby shower gift basket!
17. Muslin Burp Cloths, $16.99
If you’re putting together a newborn baby essentials list, do NOT underestimate how many burp cloths you’ll need! Between spit-up, milk dribbles, and unexpected little messes, we go through these constantly. I especially love muslin burp cloths because they’re lightweight, absorbent, breathable, and quick-drying. They also come in tons of cute colors and patterns! I keep a stash in our living room, nursery, diaper bag, and car because somehow you always need one when you least expect it. They’re one of those affordable baby registry items that you’ll probably use every single day. Just remember to keep burp cloths and other loose fabrics out of your baby’s sleep space.
18. SNOO Smart Sleeper Baby Bassinet, $1695 or
The SNOO Smart Sleeper Bassinet has been one of our biggest baby gear splurges, but it’s also been one of our favorite newborn products! This smart bassinet uses gentle rocking and white noise designed to help soothe babies. It can respond to crying by adjusting its motion and sound settings, and you can control certain features through your phone. We’ve really appreciated having those soothing options during the newborn stage, especially when we’re all trying to get some much-needed rest. That said, every baby is different, and no bassinet can guarantee longer stretches of sleep. The SNOO is expensive, so I love that there are options to rent one instead of purchasing it outright. If you’re considering this bassinet, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s current age, weight, positioning, and sleep-sack instructions, and always use safe sleep practices. For our family, it’s been a product we’ve really enjoyed using!
19. Touch-Free Baby Wipe Warmer With Nightlight, $41.99
I know there are people who will tell you that a baby wipe warmer is completely unnecessary. But I’m here to tell you that Maverick has some VERY strong opinions about cold wipes! LOL! We quickly learned that he was much happier during diaper changes when the wipes weren’t freezing cold. This touch-free wipe warmer has been such a convenient addition to our changing station, especially during those late-night diaper changes. It also doubles as a nightlight that automatically turns off after 15 minutes, which is a nice little bonus. Just be sure to follow the cleaning instructions and check that the wipes aren’t too warm before using them on your baby’s skin. Is a wipe warmer an absolute necessity for every newborn? Probably not. But has it made diaper changes more pleasant in our house? Absolutely! This is also a fun baby shower gift for a new mama who might not think to buy one for herself.
What Newborn Baby Essentials Do You Actually Need?
One thing I’ve learned since becoming a mom is that every baby is different. Some products become everyday lifesavers, while others barely get used. And that’s completely normal! If you’re trying to figure out what to buy for a newborn baby, I recommend starting with the basics before investing in every fancy baby gadget you see online. Safe sleep essentials, properly fitted clothing, diapers, wipes, feeding supplies, a suitable car seat, and a practical way to transport your baby are a good place to begin. From there, you can add products that make sense for your family’s lifestyle. For example, if you’re exclusively breastfeeding, a bottle washer might not be a priority. If you’re pumping several times a day, it could become one of your most-used purchases. And while I personally love our SNOO and luxury stroller, you absolutely don’t need expensive baby gear to be a great parent. The best newborn essentials are the ones that make everyday life easier for YOU.
