5 Hacks To Revive Dry & Damaged Balayage Hair
We’ve all heard it – new year, new you! New Year’s resolutions can be fun to make however not-so-fun to follow up with. This year, I’m planning on making mine more specific and manageable. As much as I’d love to reach for the stars, a girl’s gotta be realistic. With that being said, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to take better care of my hair. If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know I’m a huge fan of balayage (aka applying a ton of bleach on it) and as a result, my hair (and ends, more specifically) are dry, dry, dry! I’ve teamed up with powerhouse TRESemme to sh0wcase the most effective (and manageable) ways to care for dry hair – even for a girl on the go! Keep reading to see my top 5 tips to making dry, brittle hair look healthy – now!
1. Use A Shampoo & Conditioner Curated For Dry Hair
Along with bleach, color and hot tools – the weather has an enormous affect on the state of our hair. Extreme cold and blazing sun can be extremely drying, so it’s especially important to use a shampoo and conditioner curated for dry hair during the winter and summer months. When it comes to hair care, dry hair requires additional hydration which is the main focus of TRESemme’s Ultimate Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. This dynamic duo contains Moisture Complex which gives your hair that extra shot of moisture it so desperately needs. It also helps to restore hair to its natural smoothness and shine – and smells heavenly. I’ve been using this combination for the past few weeks and it’s helped nurse my dry ends and even given my hair added bounce! I used the duo prior to styling my hair for this shoot so see for yourself!
2. Style Your Hair With Products Crafted For Dry Hair
In addition to cutting corners with hot tools, those with dry hair also need to use styling tools crafted with dry hair in mind. If you have dry hair, using a leave- in conditioner is essential. You’ll also want to use a heat protector on your hair prior to using hot tools. Yes, that includes your hair dryer. As for hairspray – it’s important to find one that doesn’t dry the living heck out of your hair. Finding a hairspray that holds style without making it look like stone is a task, let me tell you. Lately I’ve been using TRESemme’s new Compressed Micro Mist Hair Spray Boost Hold Level 3 to keep my hair in check. I used this hairspray to create my bombshell curls in these photos and my curls stayed for 3 days! My hair still had bounce and wasn’t hard as a rock either. This particular hairspray also fights against humidity so your hair doesn’t look like a frizzy mess. Hallelujah!
3. Treat Yo Self With Hair Superfoods
The food we consume affects everything – from our weight to our mood. But did you know the food you eat can also affect your hair? It only makes sense as our hair grows from our noggin. So, what are hair superfoods? According to Web MD, our hair craves healthy fats. Healthy fats include avocados, salmon and olive oil. They’re all filled with essential fatty acids which help to moisturize a dry scalp with natural oils. So now you’re totally justified in paying that extra dollar for guac! Bonus: EFAs also increase the rate of hair and nail growth, help proper nerve functioning and prevent disease. It’s a win-win all around! So start eating tho0se EFAs now!
4. Let It Go
No, I’m not quoting Frozen. I’m talking about that extra 1-2 inches of hair you can do without. Getting a trim is a quick and easy way to make dry hair appear healthier. Dry hair breaks and splits easier, leaving you with nasty split ends. No matter your hair length, you should be getting a trim every 12 weeks. If you’re like me and want your hair as long as possible – you’ll have to bite the bullet and let your hairdresser do her thing. Trimming your hair will allow it to grow longer as it is less likely to split and break. Whatever you do, don’t trim your own hair! Trust me: major no-no. Not only can dull scissors fray your ends even more – you’ll likely end up with uneven hair. Not worth it!
5. Cut Corners With Hot Tools
Half of my hair could be falling out and I’d still be using my beloved hair dryer and curling wand. If you’re like me and addicted to hot tools (and have dry hair!), remember to be mindful of the health of your hair. This means cutting corners whenever possible with heat. I consider myself an expert at this. If you have the time/patience let your hair air dry once a week. Even if it partially air dries, it’s less time for your hair to be hit with direct heat. Also, reduce the temperature on your curling wand or straightening iron. The majority of hot tools come with a temperature gauge. Make sure yours isn’t on the hottest setting! Ideally, your hot tool should be on the lowest setting. It’s better to use less heat and keep it a second or two longer on your hair. You don’t want to fry off your ends! You will thank me later.
