Growing up in Ottawa, Canada I consider myself somewhat of a cold weather expert when it comes to skincare. In order to prevent dry, irritated, flakey skin it’s important to change up your skincare routine as soon as the chilly weather blows through. Today I wanted to share 5 hacks to beating dry skin and most importantly – giving your skin the TLC it deserves during the cold winter months!
1. Drink lots of water
I know I know, we’re all tired of hearing it. But seriously girl, drink that H20. Water intake is especially important during the winter months when your skin is prone to dryness and cracking. One hack that has helped me is drinking a full bottle of water before I begin my day. Beyond that, challenge yourself to drink a glass of water with every cup of coffee, every Diet Coke, every glass of wine etc. The more water you drink, the more your body will crave! I guarantee you’ll notice a difference in your skin when you up your water intake.
3. Exfoliate your skin
Now more than ever it’s imperative to exfoliate your skin! The cold winter months can cause dry flaky skin. In order to maintain glowing skin – you’ll want to get rid of any crocodile looking skin! During the winter months, I find it easiest to exfoliate in the shower. I simply take my favorite exfoliator and an exfoliator brush and gently rub my skin in a circular formation to remove dry/dead skin. My skin always feels 10x softer afterward! I always use a body cream afterward targeted towards dry skin – recently I’ve been using Dove DermaSeries Body Lotion! It’s perfect for my sensitive skin – fragrance-free, lightweight and ultra hydrating!
4. Stick with a skincare system targeted at dry skin
Let’s face it: winter can be cruel to your skin. For this reason, it’s extremely important to change up your skincare system completely during the winter months. The skincare products you use during the summer most likely won’t give your skin the extra hydration it needs in the winter. It’s important to find a skincare system that works for you! 5. Don’t forget SPF!
During the winter months, a lot of people ditch the SPF. The truth is, just because it’s cold AF outside doesn’t mean the harmful UV rays aren’t present. While UVB rays are weaker (hence a lack of sunburns) the UVA rays (which cause wrinkles, aging and in extreme cases skin cancer) are just as strong. Healthier skin is easier to care for – so make sure to layer on that SPF!
