5 Humidity Hacks to Stay Cool, Sweat Less & Look Cute in Hot Weather
If there’s one thing that can ruin a perfectly good hair day, it’s humidity. You can spend an hour styling your hair, putting together a cute outfit, and doing your makeup, only to step outside and immediately feel like you’ve walked into a sauna. Your hair doubles in size, your clothes start sticking to you, and suddenly you’re questioning why you even bothered getting ready. Sound familiar? SAME. As someone who grew up in Canada and later spent years living in Florida, I learned pretty quickly that hot weather and high humidity are two very different things. My grandma always said, “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity,” and honestly, she was onto something. When the air is full of moisture, sweat doesn’t evaporate as easily, which makes it harder for your body to cool down. The good news? There are a few simple tricks that can make those sticky, sweaty days a whole lot more manageable. Today I’m sharing five humidity hacks I’ve learned over the years to help you stay comfortable, manage frizzy hair, and feel a little more put together when the weather has other plans.

Why Does Humidity Make You Feel So Hot and Sweaty?
Before we get into my favourite summer beauty hacks, let’s talk about why humidity makes everything feel SO much worse. When temperatures rise, your body produces sweat to help regulate your temperature. Normally, sweat evaporates from your skin and helps cool you down. But when the air is already full of moisture, that evaporation happens more slowly. The result? You feel sticky, sweaty, and uncomfortable, even if you’re not doing much physical activity. High humidity can also affect your hair, makeup, and clothing, which explains why your usual beauty routine might not hold up quite as well on a muggy summer day. And if you’ve ever wondered why the weather forecast mentions the dew point, it’s because higher dew points generally mean there’s more moisture in the air, making it feel increasingly muggy outside. Thankfully, a few adjustments to your everyday routine can make a noticeable difference.
Humidity Hack #1: Use Cornstarch-Based Body Powder to Manage Moisture
One of my longtime humidity hacks is using a little body powder in areas that tend to get sweaty or uncomfortable. When it’s hot and sticky outside, moisture can collect anywhere skin rubs together, including underneath your chest, around skin folds, and other areas prone to friction. A small amount of cornstarch-based, talc-free body powder may help absorb surface moisture and reduce that uncomfortable sticky feeling. The key is to apply it sparingly to clean, dry, intact skin rather than creating a cloud of powder. Avoid inhaling loose powder and keep it away from your face and intimate areas. It’s also important to remember that powder absorbs moisture; it doesn’t actually stop your body from producing sweat. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend choosing a fragrance-free product and testing it on a small area first. For persistent chafing, a dedicated anti-chafe balm may be a better option. Little tricks like these can make wearing summer dresses and lightweight outfits so much more comfortable.
Humidity Hack #2: Keep Dry Shampoo Handy for Sweaty Roots
Can we talk about humidity hair for a second? Because nothing is more frustrating than spending time styling your hair only to walk outside and watch it turn into a frizzy mess. Humidity can cause hair to absorb moisture from the air, which temporarily changes the hydrogen bonds within the hair and contributes to frizz. This can be especially noticeable if your hair is naturally porous, colour-treated, or prone to dryness. While dry shampoo won’t actually prevent humidity-related frizz, it can be a lifesaver when your roots start feeling oily or sweaty. I love keeping a travel-size dry shampoo in my bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day. Simply apply a small amount to your roots according to the product directions, allow it to absorb excess oil, and gently brush or massage it through. If frizz is your biggest concern, consider pairing dry shampoo with a lightweight anti-humidity styling product or smoothing serum. And don’t forget, a cute claw clip, braid, or low bun can be your best friend when the humidity is doing the absolute most.
Humidity Hack #3: Wear Lightweight, Breathable Summer Clothes
One of the easiest ways to stay more comfortable in hot and humid weather is to choose the right outfit. As much as I love a good pair of jeans, heavy denim and tight, restrictive clothing are usually the LAST things I want to wear when it’s muggy outside. Instead, I reach for loose-fitting dresses, breathable tops, and lightweight fabrics that allow air to circulate around my skin. Cotton and linen can be great options, while certain moisture-wicking fabrics may be especially helpful if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors or being active. Personally, I LOVE wearing summer dresses because they’re comfortable, easy to style, and require practically zero effort. Just throw on a dress, add a cute pair of sandals, grab your favourite accessories, and you’re ready to go. The blue dress pictured above is exactly the kind of outfit I gravitate toward when temperatures start climbing. I also prefer comfortable, breathable footwear on especially hot days. Open sandals can feel cooler than heavy shoes, although supportive closed-toe footwear may be a better choice for activities that require more protection. The goal is to find summer outfits that look cute without making you feel like you’re melting.
Humidity Hack #4: Find an Antiperspirant That Actually Works
Let’s be real: sweating is completely normal, especially when you’re spending time outside in hot, humid weather. But that doesn’t mean dealing with sweaty underarms and deodorant marks is particularly fun. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that finding the right underarm product can make a HUGE difference in how comfortable you feel throughout the day. It’s also worth knowing that deodorant and antiperspirant aren’t exactly the same thing. Deodorant helps control body odour, while antiperspirant contains ingredients designed to temporarily reduce sweating. If excessive underarm moisture is your main concern, look for a product specifically labelled as an antiperspirant. Over the years, I’ve tried countless products, and one of my longtime favourites has been Dove Clear Finish Dry Sprays. I originally loved these sprays because they felt lightweight, dried quickly, and didn’t leave noticeable white marks on my clothing when applied correctly. Spray formulas can also feel refreshing when you’re getting ready on a hot day. As always, follow the application directions, use sprays in a well-ventilated area, and avoid applying products to irritated skin. Finding a formula that works for your body and skin sensitivity is key.
Humidity Hack #5: Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
If there’s one piece of advice my mom has repeated approximately a million times, it’s to DRINK MORE WATER. And when you’re dealing with hot, humid weather, hydration really does matter. Because your body relies on sweating to regulate its temperature, you can lose a significant amount of fluid when you’re outside in the heat. When humidity is high, sweat doesn’t evaporate as efficiently, so you may continue sweating without getting the same cooling benefit. One of my favourite little tricks is ordering a glass of water whenever I pick up a fun drink. For example, if I’m grabbing a Starbucks Pink Drink (still one of my favourites!), I’ll often order a large iced water to go with it. It’s such a simple habit, but it reminds me to keep drinking water throughout the day. Rather than aiming for one exact number of glasses, pay attention to your thirst, activity level, and how much you’re sweating. Your fluid needs can vary depending on the weather and your individual health. If you’re spending hours outside or sweating heavily, you may also need to replace electrolytes. And remember, hydration is only part of staying safe in extreme heat. Take breaks in air-conditioned or shaded spaces, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours, and don’t ignore symptoms like dizziness, weakness, headache, or nausea.
More Tips for Staying Comfortable in Hot and Humid Weather
Beyond these five humidity hacks, there are a few other little things I love doing when the weather gets especially muggy. Keeping a small portable fan in your bag can be surprisingly helpful, especially when you’re waiting outside or travelling. I also recommend choosing lightweight makeup products rather than layering on heavy foundation and powder, which may feel uncomfortable in the heat. Blotting papers are another easy way to manage facial shine without constantly adding more makeup. If you’re heading outdoors, don’t forget broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply it according to the label, especially after sweating or swimming. And whenever possible, plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day. Sometimes the best summer beauty hack is simply giving yourself permission to spend a little time in the air conditioning!
