There are a few magic ingredients in the skincare world. Retinol is one of them. This vitamin A derivative has an impressive list of anti-aging benefits. Today I’m exploring the benefits of retinol, who should use retinol and how to add it into your current skincare routine. Plus, see my picks for the top affordable drugstore retinol products!
What is retinol?
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and when applied topically it increases collagen production and the rate of cell turnover. This helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Topical retinol can be prescribed by a dermatologist or purchased at a lower strength in drugstore creams and serums.
Why should you use retinol?
There are numerous benefits of adding retinol to your skincare routine. As previously mentioned, it helps to reduce the appearance of fine line and wrinkles. Further, it evens out your complexion and reduces the appearance of pigmentation (age spots). It also aids in unclogging pores by exfoliating your skin, which treats acne, blackheads and clogged pores. Finally, retinol aids in improving skin texture by thickening the dermis (layer beneath the surface of your skin). This gives you a healthier, more youthful appearance.
Who should use retinol?
Those in their 20s should consider implementing retinol into their skincare routine. By the time you’re in your 30s retinal should be a staple in your skincare routine. As far as skin type is involved retinol can be used on all skin types. However, if you have sensitive skin, fair skin, or sun damaged skin it is important to ease into the world of retinol slowly.
How often should I use retinol in my skincare system?
If you’re a first timer, it is important to ease into the world of retinol. For starters, stick with a retinol serum or cream that has moisturizer built into it. For example, the Olay Retinol Max Cream ($32 from Walmart) formula contains a maximum concentration of hydrators. Next, start applying a small amount of product once a day (at night) every other day for a week. At the end of the week evaluate your skin. If there is no irritation, you can begin applying it every night. If your skin becomes red or flaky add extra moisturizer. While using retinol it is important you wear a minimum of SPF 30 as retinal can make your skin more sensitive to the sun’s harmful UV rays.
How long will it take to see results?
Depending on the strength of retinol used, it typically takes three to six months of regular use before improvements in wrinkles are visible. When it comes to acne treatment, it can take up to twelve months for a full improvement.
What are side effects of retinol?
Retinol can be rough on skin and create dryness, redness, and peeling. These are all side effects of the retinol turning over skin cells.
What retinol products are best for beginners?
Beginners should use a lower dose of retinol which can be found in drugstore products. Many find it less irritating on skin especially if you have sensitive skin. Olay has recently launched a new and improved line of retinol infused products created with dry and sensitive skin in mind. The quality also comparable to $150+ luxury skincare products. All three products are made with 20% more retinol than previous formulas and contain no fragrance, phthalates, mineral oil or synthetic dyes.
