How to Make a TY Beanie Baby Tag for Your Dog
Ready to turn your furry bestie into the cutest stuffed animal ever? Creating this homemade Beanie Baby Halloween costume for dogs is SO easy. Grab your supplies, put on your favorite Netflix show, and follow these five simple steps!
Step 1: Draw and Cut Out a White Heart

Start by drawing a large heart on your white Bristol board using a pencil. The size will depend on your dog, so hold the paper near your pup to get a rough idea of what looks best. For smaller dogs, create a smaller heart. For larger dogs like golden retrievers, you can make the tag a little bigger for that classic Beanie Baby look. If drawing hearts isn’t your thing, simply search for a heart template online, print it out, and trace it onto your cardstock. Once you’re happy with the shape, carefully cut it out using scissors.
Step 2: Outline the White Heart With a Gold Marker

Next, grab your gold marker and draw a thick outline around the edge of your white heart. Don’t stress about making it perfect! Once we add the red heart on top, only the outer gold border will be visible. This little detail helps recreate the iconic TY Beanie Baby tag and gives your DIY dog costume a more authentic look.
Step 3: Draw and Cut Out a Smaller Red Heart

Now it’s time to create the signature red heart! Using your red Bristol board, draw a slightly smaller heart that will fit neatly inside the white one. Make sure you leave enough room around the edges for the gold border to peek through. Cut out the red heart and place it on top of the white heart to check the sizing before gluing anything down. This is where your homemade TY Beanie Baby tag really starts coming together!
Step 4: Create the Iconic TY Letters

Using your pencil, draw the recognizable white TY letters on the red heart. You can look up a photo of an original Beanie Baby tag for inspiration or print a simple letter template to trace. Once you’re happy with the design, cut out the letters from your leftover white cardstock and glue them onto the red heart. Next, glue the red heart onto the white heart, making sure the gold outline remains visible. Allow everything to dry completely before moving on to the final step. And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. That’s part of the charm of a homemade Halloween costume!
Step 5: Attach the Beanie Baby Tag to Your Dog’s Collar

You’re almost finished! Once the glue has dried, use a hole punch to create a small hole near the upper-left side of the heart. Thread a short piece of string through the hole and attach the tag securely to your dog’s existing collar or harness, rather than tying string around their neck. Make sure the tag is lightweight, doesn’t interfere with movement, and can’t easily be chewed or swallowed. Keep your pup supervised while wearing it and remove it if they seem uncomfortable. And voilร ! You’ve officially turned your dog into an adorable, life-sized Beanie Baby!
