Puppy Fever!

Get The Look

If you were to ask what my perfect day looked like it would involve a mani/pedi, lots of coffee and all the puppies I could get my hands on. I’ve always loved dogs and a puppy was always #1 on my Christmas list. I sadly never got one (one day!), so when I see one I get major puppy fever! So when Royal Canin asked me if I would attend the AKC National Championship Dog Show it was a dream come true! A day filled with every dog breed I could imagine?! Goals.

Before I get into the (adorable) details on the dog show, I wanted to give y’all a quick introduction to Royal Canin! A global pet food leader and official sponsor of the AKC National Championship Dog Show, Royal Canin’s mission is grounded in science and creating the best products for your pup. Through years of research, they have discovered the perfect formula for the size (and shape!) of kibble for each dog. Each dog (and cat) has a different face and tongue shape, which can be accommodated by the perfection selection of kibble. They also create DNA tests for your dog to learn more about your dog’s heritage! To learn more, click here!

The AKC National Championship Dog Show was nothing short of a dog lover’s dream! It is a weekend long event filled with  hundreds of dogs – being shown, being groomed, meeting visitors and looking beyond adorable. There were countless dog shows throughout the weekend including conformation (to evaluate breeding stock), obedience, rally (requiring teamwork between dog and owner!), agility, tracking, best in show and more! My favorite show to watch was the dock diving! Imagine dogs of all shapes and sizes running off a dock and diving into water. I. can’t. even.

Attendees are also spoiled with ongoing presentations throughout the weekend to learn more about specific dog breeds and their multitude of talents. I loved learning about scent work in particular. Scent work is a sport that mimics the task of detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler the scent has been discovered. As seen in the photo above, Aegis the dog was shown sniffing out 11 different odors! We were also treated with a visit from Corporal Megan Leavey, who shared her experience of working as a K9 handler in New York City with explosive detection dogs! It was incredible to learn how dogs can be trained to sniff out drugs and bombs and ultimately help keep our cities safe!

My favorite part of the dog show was hands down the ‘meet the breeds’ section! Throughout the entire weekend, attendees had the opportunity to meet a variety of purebred dog breeds. Each breed had their own section where you could learn about their heritage, personalities and how they are as family members. The best part…you can pet and interact with the dogs! Spending a better portion of the afternoon playing with the dogs was the best form of therapy I could have received. My cheeks were sore from all the smiles!

We also had the opportunity to hang out with Jerry O’Connell – actor, television personality and dog lover! I had no idea he was a dog enthusiast until he began gushing over his German Shepherd, Pirate. He was incredibly down to earth and fun to talk with. Myself and two other bloggers even had the opportunity to film something special with him for the show! Make sure to tune in to the AKC National Championship on Animal Planet on Monday, January 1, 2018 at 7PM EST to see what we created!

If every weekend could involve this much face time with dogs, I would be one happy girl! I will definitely be attending next years show! Make sure to tune into the AKC National Championship Dog Show Presented by Royal Canin will premiere on Animal Planet on New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 at 7PM EST. An encore of the special will air at 11PM EST.
